Gutzon Borglum was born in Saint Charles on March 25, 1867, and went on to become a well known sculptor. He is most famous as the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, but has a wide body of work. The memorial pictured below on the church property was removed and the city took possession of the center stone which it had mounted for display on city property. There is a new memorial adjacent to the city hall. The project is ongoing and there is a need for public donations to help fund the new memorial.
